A sale is not money in your bank yet. eBay can hold the funds for a while first — for one order, or for all of a seller's orders for a period — and only pays out once the hold is released. Here is when that happens and how long it lasts on eBay.com.
Why eBay holds funds
eBay says holds keep the marketplace safe and meet its legal obligations. The usual reasons are:
- You are a new seller, or have only sold occasionally.
- The item is high-priced.
- Your sales jumped — unusual activity or a sudden rise in orders.
- Something about the order needs checking, such as a tracking discrepancy.
- Your account was recently suspended or restricted.
How long a hold lasts
| Situation | Funds are released |
|---|---|
| New private seller, eBay shipping label | 2 days after delivery is confirmed |
| New private seller, other tracked label | 7 days after delivery is confirmed |
| New private seller, no tracking | 31 days after payment |
| New business seller, eBay label | 24 hours after delivery is confirmed |
| New business seller, other methods | 15 days after payment |
| Occasional seller | 24 hours after tracked delivery, or 31 days after payment untracked |
| High-priced item | 31 days after the transaction |
| After a suspension or restriction | Holds apply for 30 days after it is lifted |
A new private seller stops being held once they have at least 10 completed sales totalling $150 or more, with no more than two open requests, cases or transaction defects in the last 12 months.
Getting funds released sooner
- Use eBay shipping labels. Tracking uploads itself and confirms delivery, which is what most holds wait for.
- Upload tracking within your handling time if you buy labels elsewhere.
- For local pickup, scan or enter the buyer's pickup code to confirm collection.
From balance to bank
Released money becomes available and is paid out on your schedule — daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly. eBay's page notes that from 4 November 2026, eligible US private sellers and sole proprietors move to on-demand payouts by default as the eBay balance rolls out; you can still choose an automatic schedule.
Cash is not profit
Money on hold has been earned but not paid, so a busy week can look poor in your bank and a quiet week can look good. Profit belongs to the order, on the day it sold; the hold only decides when you can spend it. Why your payout is not your profit.
Baiord's Finance page (switched on per workspace) shows your eBay balance split into available, on hold and processing, every held payment with the order it belongs to, and each payout to your bank. Where your eBay money is.
eBay's own pages
The rates and rules in this guide were checked against these on 30 October 2026. eBay changes its fees from time to time; its pages are the final word.
