How the calculator works it out
It follows eBay's own rules. The total sale is the sold price plus the postage the buyer paid plus, on eBay.com, the sales tax eBay collects. The final value fee, the regulatory operating fee (UK business sellers), the international fee and the Promoted Listings fee are all percentages of that total, each rounded to the cent. The per-order fee is added once: $0.30 or 30p when the order total is $10 / £10 or less, $0.40 or 40p above. UK business fees carry 20% VAT, which a VAT-registered seller reclaims.
Profit is the sold price and postage you received, minus eBay's fees, minus what you paid for the item, its postage and anything else. Sales tax is left out: eBay collects it and pays it to the state, so it is never yours. For a VAT-registered UK seller, the VAT in the price is left out too.
The break-even price is the sold price at which profit is exactly zero with everything else as entered, and the target price is the one that leaves the margin you asked for — both include the fees that rise with the price.
The rates it uses
eBay.ca follows the same pattern as eBay.com — 13.6% in most categories up to C$7,500 then 2.35%, C$0.30 or C$0.40 an order — with an international fee of 0.4% to the US and 1% elsewhere. On eBay.com.au, sellers with up to A$25,000 of sales in the last 12 months sell free, paying only a 3% international fee on sales abroad; above that eBay moves them to a Pro plan. Any eBay site not built in takes its rates under Another eBay site.
Europe, for business sellers without a shop: eBay.de charges 14% in standard categories, with a 5% rate for used and refurbished items in many of them, plus €0.35 an order (€0.45 over €10); eBay.fr 9% and eBay.it 11% in most categories, plus €0.35 an order; eBay.es 9% up to €990 then 2%; eBay.ie, eBay.nl, eBay.be and eBay.at 11% up to €990 then 2%; eBay.ch 11% up to CHF 990 then 2%, plus CHF 0.55 or CHF 0.65 an order; eBay.pl 11% up to 4,600 zł then 2%, plus 1.35 zł or 1.90 zł an order. Every European site except Germany adds a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and all their fees carry VAT unless you give eBay a VAT number. Selling outside the eurozone and Sweden adds 1.6% (rest of Europe, US, Canada), 1.2% (UK) or 3.3% (elsewhere). Private sellers in Germany and France sell free at home.
eBay.com: 13.6% in most categories up to $7,500 then 2.35%; 15.3% for books, films and music; 13.25% for coins and trading cards; tiered rates for handbags, jewelry and watches; 6.7% for guitars. International sales add 1.65%. eBay.co.uk business sellers: 12.9% in everything else, lower in many categories (11.9% clothing, 10.9% collectables, 9.9% media and most electronics, 6.9% for laptops, phones and TVs up to £1,000), plus 0.35% regulatory operating fee; international 1.05%–2.0% by region. UK private sellers: no selling fees at home, 3% to buyers abroad. Every eBay fee explained.
Questions
How much does eBay take from a sale?
On eBay.com most categories pay 13.6% of the total the buyer paid — item, postage and sales tax — plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). On eBay.co.uk a business seller pays 12.9% in most categories, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee and 40p per order, plus VAT; private sellers pay no selling fees on domestic sales.
Is eBay's fee charged on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. The final value fee is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which includes the postage the buyer paid and, on eBay.com, the sales tax eBay collected. Promoted Listings General fees are worked out on the same total.
What is a good profit margin on eBay?
It depends on the category and how you source, but know it per item: an ad rate or a supplier price rise that looks small can take most of a thin margin. Use the break-even and target-margin prices here to see how much room an item has.
Which eBay sites does it cover?
Sixteen are built in: eBay.com, eBay.ca, eBay.co.uk, eBay.ie, eBay.de, eBay.fr, eBay.it, eBay.es, eBay.nl, eBay.be, eBay.at, eBay.ch, eBay.pl and eBay.com.au, with private-seller options for the UK, Germany and France. For any other eBay site, choose Another eBay site and enter its final value fee, per-order fee, international fee and any VAT eBay adds to its fees.
Does this include eBay Store discounts?
No. The rates are those eBay publishes for sellers without a Store or Shop subscription, and without Top Rated discounts. A subscription lowers the final value fee in many categories.
